I need your help. On the second Tuesday of every month I am starting something(that I can't seem to name) in order to allow for open, civil discussion between anyone who shows up. We are doing it at a cafe/coffeehouse that also serves beer and wine. I think the appeal will mainly be towards college students, but I am going to open it up to all who are interested.
Here is what I need help with:
1) A name:
TheoLatte?
Theology Fight Club?
Theology at the Cafe?
Help me, I clearly need it. Give me some name suggestions that will be appealing. Remember the purpose of this is to have a time where we pick a theme every night and then every has an equal say and opinion after I spend about 5 minutes setting up the theme and the questions that go along with it. My hope is that through this I will be able to build relationships with lost people and connect with them beyond this 2 hours a month and for truth to be discussed in the presence of a lot of lost people. It should be an exciting time of outreach and connecting.
2) Themes... Here are some themes I have so far. The themes can't be to churchy and I dont want them to be too political. I am looking for themes that are important to a WIDE audience of people.
Does God exist? Why does it matter?
Human beings: do we have a soul and what's its calue?
Does religion belong in the public square?
Postmodernism: a bad phase or a needed change?
What has gone wrong in the world?
Religion: a crutch or a crucifix?
Dependency: do we need each other?
Church: Who needs it?
Islam: how do we respond?
Justice: what is out role?
The Bible: is it credible?
Fundamentalism: conviction, crazy, or dangerous?
Does religion promote violence?
God, love, and sex.
Sexual orientation: design or choice?
Environmentalism: responsibility or political correctness?
Those are what I could think of off the top of my head. Help me out. Tell me which ones are good and which ones are not so good. Also, feel free to give some topics that would be good!
I'd go with Java & Jesus; says where you stand on every issue :)
ReplyDeleteOf the three, "TheoLatté" is the most clever, but people might not get it.
Avoid anything with Fight Club as it's a dated reference.
You could always just call it a Theology Pub?
"Tuesday Truthology"
ReplyDeleteAaron,
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Java & Jesus is that this isn't merely a "christian" thing. I am advertising through the local newspaper I write for, on campus at the university, and a few other ways. I am merely opening the theme and posing the necessary questions, it will then be a free for all.
The problem with Theology Pub is that I have some Fundies in my church that would flip out if I hosted something with the name Pub in it.
TheoLatte was my original choice, but I thought Theology Fight Club might be a lot more appealing, especially to college students. I think it conveys the fact that it isnt a time of teaching, but an open discussion in which all are welcome.
Rule #1- Don't talk about theology Fight Club.
